Chobham

The Chobham area has been an attractive area for people to set up their home for a very long time. There is evidence that the area was populated as far back as 2500BC, and throughout history it has played host to many residents including the Romans, Saxons, Vikings and even a Norman Abbott who set up home at nearby Chertsey.

It is believed that invading Germans warrior-farmers established settlements in Surrey and that one of the chieftains was called Ceabba, which lead to the settlement he established becoming known as Ceabba's Ham. Eventually this name evolved to Chobham.

In more recent times, Chobham has become more of a backwater, In the 18th century the canal development passed to the south, and the later construction of the A3 and A30 road passed the village by. Even the railway only came as close as Woking and Sunningdale, both less than 10 miles away.

The result has been an unspoilt oasis of quiet and peace in the Surrey countryside. One that despite its rural aspects still maintains easy links to the major transport routes and to the airport at Heathrow, ideal for the busy business people of today who want to relax when away from the office.

The nature of the historic properties on the High Street has resulted in the development of specialist shops, public houses and restaurants instead of giant supermarkets. As a consequence, Chobham has retained its olde worlde charm and atmosphere.

However, residents find that they are well served by the major shopping areas of Woking, Guildford and just off the M3 at Frimley.

The surrounding area.

Chobham stands within Chobham Common. The Common is an ancient area of heath land, believed to have been created 4000 years ago by the clearing and burning of the tree cover for agricultural use. Today it is considered to be one of the best examples of lowland heath in Europe. As one of the largest areas of heath in northern Surrey, the Common provides a huge leisure resource for the local residents and its status as a nature reserve ensures the future character of the surrounding area.
